T1D Stigma
Recruiting to: September 2025
Aim
We know that some people with diabetes can experience feelings of disapproval and judgement against them as a result of their condition, which is described as a feeling stigmatised or experiencing stigma and that this can be distressing. We would like to assess how this affects a wide range of people with the condition, in order to understand who is more likely to be affected, how it can affect them and why they feel this way. The results of the study will identify ways we can reduce the effect of stigma on people living with diabetes, as well as ways to intervene in society to prevent it.

Who can take part?
Anyone diagnosed with type 1 diabetes who is 18 years or older, and is able to understand and write in the English language
What does taking part involve?
Taking part will involve filling in a brief survey, which will include research questionnaires. These can be completed either via an online link or via postal paper forms and should take 20-30 minutes to complete.
You can also opt into taking part in the design group and/or focus group phase of the study. These will both be group discussions with others who have also taken part, to discuss your thoughts and feelings about stigma further. We will contact people who consent to these second phases based on their questionnaire scores as we intend to include people who are particularly affected by stigma. Not everyone that expresses an interest in taking part will be contacted to participate.
Who is running this study?
The T1D Stigma study is led by Prof Nick Oliver and sponsored by Imperial College London. It is funded by Diabetes UK.
